TOP 5 TIPS FOR HOME WORKOUTS

Establishing an at home workout routine can be a challenge. There are many distractions, and often no source of accountability. Here are my top 5 tips for creating an effective home workout routine.

1. FIND A WORKOUT ROUTINE TO FOLLOW

There are PLENTY of resources for workout routines online. There are apps you can buy, youtube videos and even online meetups. If you can find a program that has a structured daily routine you will have a source of structure and plan to follow that takes away the need to spend mental energy thinking about what to do.

2. CREATE A WORKOUT SPACE

Set up your own little space that you feel good in. I like having a mirror in front of me, especially if I’m doing anything with weights to check form. I didn’t exactly have a perfect spot in my condo, but have made my own space in my living room as you can see in the photo. There are plenty of workout routines that don’t need any equipment whatsoever, so depending on the space and type of workouts you plan to do, just a plain yoga mat may do.

3. PAIR THIS HABIT WITH ONE THAT YOU ENJOY

Take a habit that you need and combine it with a habit that you want or is easy to you. Ex. You want to have a cup of coffee and play poker, but need to go workout. Change this to, I will have my coffee, but must workout after, then can play poker. Combining the habit with something you enjoy will act as a reward on the brain. I like to sit and drink pre workout or have a coffee while doing things on my phone (easy habit), then workout (more challenging habit), then play poker (easy habit). Some days I really just want to play poker, but this morning ritual is now so ingrained to me that I feel off if I miss it.

4. GET IT DONE EARLY

Make your workout the most important way to start your day. It really is the perfect way to begin a day, and you won’t have any other things that get in the way from making the time to do it. I strongly believe in not checking your phone until this is done. It is so easy to waste time on the phone first thing in the morning, and lose an hour of time or even more. Set your priorities and take this away as an option. I like to put my phone on airplane mode when I sleep and take it off only when my workout is over.

5. JUST DO IT!

There really isn’t a magic piece of advice. You just do it. You know working out is good for you, and there are plenty of options for how you can get exercise into your life. You decide that it’s an essential habit in your life and you set yourself up for success. Workout plan + Workout space + scheduled time + (caffeine or pre workout supplement optional, but necessary for me)= work out done. Being consistent is really the key when it comes to forming a habit and to seeing results!
